Application Scenarios of Tapered Plugs for Pipe Opening Sealing

Featuring a tapered profile with larger top and smaller bottom, elastic interference fit and easy installation and removal, tapered plugs are widely used for temporary sealing, dust prevention, leakage protection and physical protection of various circular pipe openings. Thanks to wide adaptability, reliable sealing performance and reusability, they have been applied extensively in industrial manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, equipment fabrication, pipeline engineering, hardware and automotive industries. Combined with actual usage demands and working conditions, their typical application scenarios are classified as follows.
Temporary Plugging During Production and Assembly

This is the most common application of tapered plugs. During machining processes such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, spraying and electroplating, pipe openings, internal threaded holes and flange joints are easily contaminated by metal chips, dust, cutting fluid, paint and electroplating solution. Tapered plugs can be inserted quickly to achieve temporary sealing, protecting inner cavities and threads from contamination and mechanical damage. Plastic pipes, pipe fittings and hollow products produced via injection molding, blow molding and extrusion are sealed with tapered plugs right after production, so as to stop foreign matter from entering internal cavities during handling and circulation. In the equipment assembly stage, exposed ports of hydraulic pipelines, pneumatic tubes, oil lines and water pipes are blocked before assembly, preventing dust and moisture from entering pipeline systems and guaranteeing unobstructed flow and high assembly accuracy. The tapered surface can accommodate slight dimensional differences of pipe openings, which avoids frequent replacement of different specifications and improves overall applicability.

Finished Product Protection During Storage, Transit and Shipping

Pipe openings are the most vulnerable parts for finished pipes, fittings, valves and hollow components during warehouse storage, cross-site transportation and delivery. Tapered plugs are installed at both ends of metal pipes, stainless steel pipes, PVC/PPR pipes and corrugated pipes to block dust, moisture and rainwater, preventing inner wall rust and scaling. Meanwhile, they protect pipe ends from curling, deformation and scratches caused by extrusion and collision during stacking and transportation. Water heating fittings, gas connectors, hydraulic couplings and valve ports are fully sealed with tapered plugs in storage to protect internal threads and sealing surfaces from wear and contamination, ensuring qualified products upon delivery. Small hollow plastic parts and metal sleeves can also adopt tapered plugs to seal openings and prevent foreign matter intrusion.
Pipeline System Pressure Testing, Leak Detection and Temporary Plugging
After installation, water supply and drainage pipelines, industrial fluid pipelines, gas pipelines and HVAC pipelines need to undergo hydraulic test, pneumatic test and air tightness inspection. Tapered plugs act as temporary stoppers to seal pipe ends, branch ports and reserved openings. The sealed pipeline is then filled with water or gas for pressure testing, and the plugs can be removed directly after tests to resume normal pipeline operation. Compared with traditional flange plates and threaded plugs, tapered plugs deliver much higher efficiency, which is ideal for multi-point temporary testing on construction sites. During pipeline maintenance and renovation, they can temporarily block upstream and downstream openings to contain residual water, gas and debris, creating a safe and tidy working environment. They are suitable for temporary flow cut-off of civil pipelines and general industrial pipelines under low pressure and normal temperature.
Equipment, Instrument and Hydraulic/Pneumatic Interface Protection

When industrial machine tools, automated equipment, hydraulic stations, air compressors and refrigeration equipment are idle, under maintenance or ready for export, exposed hydraulic ports, pneumatic connectors, cooling water inlets and testing ports of instruments require effective sealing and protection. Tapered plugs fit closely against inner pipe walls to isolate moisture and dust in the air, avoiding deterioration of hydraulic oil and lubricant, jamming of pneumatic components and blockage of instrument pipelines. For outdoor machinery and generator sets, plugged pipe openings can keep insects and debris out, and slow down corrosion of sealing elements and threads caused by exposure to sunlight and rain. Miniature tapered plugs are used for daily dust prevention on small air and water ports of laboratory instruments and precision equipment.

Automotive, Sanitary and Household Pipe Sealing Scenarios
In the automotive industry, oil pipes, water pipes, vacuum tubes, harness conduits and chassis hollow pipes are sealed with tapered plugs during production, assembly and vehicle delivery, to stop sediment and rainwater and prevent pipe end deformation. Hollow shafts and sleeve parts of auto components also rely on tapered plugs for dust protection. In sanitary engineering, drain fittings, shower pipe connectors and floor drain reserved openings are temporarily sealed during construction to prevent cement, mortar and construction waste from blocking pipelines. Water supply and drainage fittings, garden irrigation hoses and gas accessories are sealed in retail and stock storage to keep products clean. They can also be used as temporary stoppers for unused drain ports and redundant pipe joints in households.
Simple Plugging in Chemical, Packaging and Special Working Conditions
Under non-high-pressure and non-strong-corrosion conditions, acid and alkali resistant tapered plugs can be used for temporary sealing of ordinary chemical pipelines, reserved openings of storage tanks and batching pipelines, to prevent volatile gas leakage and liquid dripping, as well as foreign matter entering containers. Small vents and discharge ports of plastic and metal barrels are sealed with tapered plugs during short-term storage and transit to avoid spillage and dust pollution. Agricultural and aquaculture water hoses and ventilation pipes are sealed during downtime to block weeds and insects. It should be noted that tapered plugs relying on interference fit are not applicable to long-term sealing of high-pressure pipelines, pressure vessels and pipelines carrying flammable and explosive media. For extreme working conditions with high temperature, low temperature or strong corrosion, as well as components with precision sealing surfaces requiring permanent closure, dedicated flange stoppers, threaded plugs or welded sealing structures shall be adopted instead.
