What is PSU material

2025-06-09 11:22:29 PSU
PSU (polysulfone) is a high-performance thermoplastic engineering plastic containing sulfonyl groups (-SO₂-) and aromatic rings. Its rigid and stable molecular structure endows it with characteristics such as high temperature resistance, high strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent insulation.

I. Key Performance Indicators

  1. High Temperature Resistance

    • Long-term service temperature: 160–180°C (polyphenylsulfone (PPSU): 190–200°C).

  2. Mechanical Strength

    • Tensile strength: 70–85 MPa; notched impact strength: 60–70 J/m, balancing rigidity and toughness.

  3. Chemical Stability

    • Resistant to acids, alkalis, salts, and most organic solvents (e.g., fuel), but soluble in polar solvents (e.g., dichloromethane).

  4. Processing Characteristics

    • Requires high-temperature injection molding (290–330°C) with high dimensional accuracy (tolerance ±0.05 mm).

II. Main Categories and Application Differences

  1. General-Purpose PSU

    • Balanced comprehensive performance, used in conventional scenarios such as electronic components and automotive engine parts.

  2. Polyethersulfone (PES)

    • High temperature resistance (180–200°C) and transparency, suitable for medical sterilization devices (e.g., surgical handles, dialyzers).

  3. Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU)

    • Strongest chemical corrosion resistance, with a temperature resistance of up to 200°C, applied in aerospace (oil-resistant engine components) and chemical equipment.

III. Typical Application Fields

  1. Medical Health

    • Surgical instruments, endoscope components (resistant to steam/gamma ray sterilization).

  2. Electronics and Electrical Engineering

    • Components in high-temperature environments (coffee machine impellers, 5G insulation parts).

  3. Automotive/Aerospace

    • Engine sensor housings, turbocharger components (temperature and oil resistance); aircraft cabin structural parts (30% weight reduction compared to aluminum alloys).

  4. Food Industry

    • Coffee machine components, food processing equipment gaskets (FDA-compliant).
