10 common plastic toughening agent combination schemes

2025-04-28 16:03:56 plastic toughening agent combination schemes
In plastic product manufacturing, plastic tougheners are key to enhancing material performance. Below are 10 common plastic toughener formulation schemes:

1. PC Tougheners – MBS and EMA

PC is prone to cracking at low temperatures. MBS (methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene) offers good compatibility with PC and absorbs impact energy, while EMA (ethylene-methyl acrylate) enhances flexibility. Together, they improve PC’s impact resistance for applications like electronic appliance casings.

2. PP Tougheners – Vistamaxx™ EPDM and TPO

PP has poor low-temperature toughness. Vistamaxx™ improves impact resistance and transparency, EPDM enhances flexibility, and TPO balances rigidity and toughness. Ideal for automotive bumpers.

3. PE Cracking Prevention – Metallocene PE and POE

PE is susceptible to cracking. Metallocene PE strengthens tensile strength and toughness, while POE (polyolefin elastomer) prevents cracking via high elasticity and compatibility. Used in films and pipes.

4. ABS Toughening – High Rubber Powder, SBS, and TPEE

ABS lacks toughness in high-demand scenarios. High rubber powder increases rubber phase content, SBS absorbs impact, and TPEE improves impact resistance and fatigue resistance. Applied in mobile phone casings.

5. PS Tougheners – SBS and K Resin

PS is rigid and brittle. SBS improves toughness, while K resin enhances impact strength and gloss. Suitable for stationery and daily necessities.

6. Nylon Tougheners – EPDM Graft and POE Graft

Nylon is notch-sensitive. EPDM and POE grafts enhance compatibility and prevent crack propagation, making them suitable for automotive engine components.

7. PVC Tougheners – Traditional CPE and Low-Temperature PTW

PVC has poor toughness. CPE (chlorinated polyethylene) improves processing and toughness, while PTW enhances impact resistance at low temperatures. Used in window profiles.

8. PPT/PET Tougheners – POE GMA Graft, PTW, and EMA

PPT and PET are notch-sensitive. POE grafted with GMA (glycidyl methacrylate) enhances compatibility and toughening, while PTW and EMA improve flexibility. Applied in fibers and films.

9. POM Toughener – TPU

POM has low notch impact strength. TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) blended with POM forms a dispersed phase to absorb energy, enhancing toughness for automotive parts.

10. PPS High-Temperature Toughener – SEBS Graft

PPS lacks toughness but requires heat resistance. SEBS grafting improves compatibility while maintaining high-temperature performance, suitable for aerospace applications.

Different plastics have unique properties and application scenarios. Selecting the right toughener formulation is critical to unlocking optimal material performance.
