How Many Shots Can Chinese Injection Molds Last? Scientific Methods to Extend Mold Service Life

2026-10-28 11:28:40 Chinese Injection Molding

The service life of injection molds is not a fixed value. It depends on mold steel grade, heat treatment, molding material, product structure, production conditions and maintenance plans. The industry classifies molds by expected shot quantity to match mass production plans. For general pre-hardened steel such as 718 and P20, used for ordinary ABS or PP parts without glass fiber fillers, the service life ranges from 300,000 to 800,000 shots. Corrosion-resistant stainless steel like S136 and 2316 suits transparent parts and materials with precipitates, with a lifespan of 500,000 to 1,200,000 shots. H13 and SKD61 hot work steel, after standardized quenching and tempering, are applied for glass-fiber reinforced engineering plastics and can reach 800,000 to 1,500,000 shots. Powder metallurgy steel delivers excellent wear and corrosion resistance, ideal for high-volume connector and packaging projects, stably supporting 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 molding cycles. Complex structures such as small lifters, sliders and thread unscrewing mechanisms usually wear out earlier than the main cavity.

Material selection and heat treatment as the foundation

Steel selection should match raw materials and production volume instead of focusing only on procurement cost. Pre-hardened steel works for low-volume projects with unfilled plastics. Glass-filled, mineral-filled or flame-retardant compounds require hot work steel or powder steel, as ordinary pre-hardened steel cannot resist erosion from fillers. Hardness must be controlled properly. Excessive hardness leads to chipping and cracking, while insufficient hardness accelerates wear. H13 steel is commonly kept at HRC48~52. Stress relief annealing before machining and aging treatment after roughing eliminate internal stress, preventing deformation and thermal fatigue cracks. High-wear zones including gates, vents and sliding surfaces are designed as replaceable inserts to avoid full cavity replacement after local damage.

Targeted surface coating for wear and corrosion resistance

Coating is a cost-effective way to extend mold life and should be selected based on actual demands. Nitriding improves surface hardness for runners, parting lines and guide components. CrN coating features low friction and outstanding anti-erosion performance for glass-filled material molds. DLC coating is widely adopted for precision micro cavities of thin-wall connectors, reducing scratch risk and material residue buildup. The cavity surface must be fully polished before coating. Tool marks and scratches will cause coating peeling. Dimension inspection is required after coating to offset size changes brought by coating thickness.

Structural design to reduce stress concentration and abnormal wear

Sharp corners and narrow gaps should be avoided, and rounded transitions are adopted where melt flows turn to lower scouring from glass fibers. Vent slots are made as replaceable inserts for convenient maintenance. Clearance of sliding mechanisms needs precise control. Too small clearance causes seizure, while excessive clearance allows plastic to seep in and form debris. Longer guide sections for small sliders and lifters reduce swinging and unilateral wear. Uniform cooling layout lowers thermal stress. Clamping force is calculated strictly according to mold expansion force; long-term over-clamping accelerates fatigue damage of plates and inserts.

Molding parameter control to avoid abnormal damage

Improper process settings are hidden threats to molds. Excessive injection speed and pressure speed up glass fiber erosion on gates and cavity surfaces. Overheating barrel temperature degrades plastic and releases corrosive by-products. Un-dried raw materials produce acidic substances during hydrolysis. High backpressure crushes glass fibers into fine fragments and intensifies abrasive wear. Stable process parameters reduce frequent adjustment and overload filling. The barrel must be purged before long shutdown to prevent carbonized material from scratching polished surfaces.

Standardized inspection and maintenance schedule

A regular checklist covers gates, vents, slider sealing surfaces, lifters, ejector pins and seals. Carbon deposits and precipitates inside vents are cleared with copper rods and soft brushes. Sandpaper and hard scrapers are forbidden to protect polishing and coating. Guide sleeves and sliding surfaces are lubricated periodically, while lubricant must be kept away from visible product surfaces. Cooling channels are cleaned regularly to remove scale. After production, the mold is fully cleaned, the water channels are dried, and anti-rust agent is applied for storage.

Spare parts stock and wear prediction management

A spare part library is established for ejector pins, springs, seals and replaceable inserts. Product changes such as increasing flash and scratches are used to judge mold wear trend. Maintenance and repair are arranged before mass defects appear. Low-stress welding is adopted for repair, followed by stress relief aging to avoid new cracks on welding zones.
