Precision Machining of Medical Metal Chains: Titanium Alloy Process Solution

2026-10-22 13:33:22 Injection Molds

Titanium alloy features low density, favorable biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and non-magnetic property. It is the preferred material for implantable medical chains, orthopedic auxiliary chains and surgical traction chains. However, its low thermal conductivity, low elastic modulus and obvious work hardening bring high machining difficulty compared with stainless steel. The whole process focuses on surface quality control, residual stress reduction, burr removal and dimension consistency, to meet acceptance standards of cleanliness, biological safety and fatigue durability for medical devices.

1. Raw Material Inspection and Pre-Treatment

Medical grade TA1, TA2 pure titanium or TC4 ELI extra low interstitial titanium alloy are selected. Material certificates cover chemical composition, mechanical property and impurity test. The content of gap elements such as iron, hydrogen and oxygen is strictly controlled, because excessive hydrogen will induce hydrogen embrittlement and chain fracture. Surface crack, peeling, scratch and inclusion are checked on incoming bars or wires. Oxide layer and contaminant are removed by acid pickling or mechanical grinding. Low-speed sawing or wire cutting is adopted for blanking to avoid high-temperature oxidation and grain coarsening. Titanium workpieces are stored separately from carbon steel to prevent iron ion pollution.

2. Rough Machining Process Points

The target of roughing is material removal while controlling cutting heat to avoid hardened layer accumulation. Cemented carbide or diamond cutting tools with sharp edge are used. Low cutting speed, moderate feed rate and proper cutting depth are adopted. Low-chlorine special titanium cutting fluid is supplied sufficiently to take away heat. The unilateral allowance for finish machining is reserved from 0.15mm to 0.3mm. Stress relief annealing in vacuum or argon shielding environment is carried out after roughing to release cutting residual stress.

3. Precision Forming of Chain Links

Single chain links are tiny with many small arcs and strict matching clearance. Wire EDM is suitable for small-batch complex contours for stable deformation control. Five-axis CNC milling is adopted for mass standardized links. Copper, aluminum or titanium fixtures are used instead of carbon steel clamps to avoid iron transfer. Clamping force is controlled properly to prevent deformation. All sharp corners are processed into rounded fillets to avoid stress concentration.

4. Deburring and Surface Finishing

Titanium burrs have high toughness and are hard to clear. Electrochemical deburring is preferred to remove micro burrs inside holes and lap gaps of chain links without changing contour dimension. Ultrasonic grinding and magnetic abrasive finishing are used for outer surface burrs. Implant-grade chain generally requires surface roughness Ra ≤0.8μm, and Ra ≤0.4μm for parts contacting soft tissue. Grinding tools and tanks are exclusive for titanium products, not shared with stainless steel.

5. Surface Treatment and Passivation Protection

Titanium can form passive oxide film automatically, but the film after machining is uneven. Medical passivation treatment with nitric acid system is applied to form compact and stable titanium dioxide protective film. Anodizing is optional for functional demand, which can form oxide film of different thickness and distinguishing color marks without precipitation. Ordinary electroplating is not allowed for implantable products for the risk of coating peeling.

6. Cleaning, Non-Destructive Test and Final Inspection

Workpieces go through alkaline degreasing, pure water rinsing, ultrasonic cleaning and dust-free drying to remove cutting fluid, abrasive paste and metal powder. Fluorescent penetrant testing is used to check surface microcracks. X-ray inspection is added for critical implant chains. Vision measuring instruments and CMM are used for dimension detection, and fatigue test is carried out to verify durability. Finished products are sealed and packed independently in dust-free package.

7. Pollution Control During Machining

Once titanium parts are contaminated by iron ions, local rust spots will appear and affect biocompatibility. Special machining zone for titanium alloy is divided in workshop. Cutters, fixtures, trays and cleaning tanks are dedicated. Operators wear dust-free gloves and use dedicated trays and isolation film to avoid scratch and secondary pollution.
