Core Design Points of Lifter Mechanism for Plastic Injection Molds in China

Lifter mechanisms are widely used in injection molds for internal undercut release. They convert vertical ejection force into lateral sliding movement, which is compact and cost-effective compared with side slides, and commonly adopted for threaded plugs, coil protectors and small plastic housings. Improper design will cause sticking, part dragging, fracture and rapid wear. Designers need to balance stroke calculation, fitting clearance, cooling layout and wear protection to guarantee stable mass production.

Lifter angle and stroke calculation

The lifter angle is the first parameter to confirm, normally ranging from 3° to 10°, and 4°~6° is preferred. A too-small angle requires a long ejection stroke to release undercuts and increases overall mold thickness. If the angle is too large, lateral force rises sharply, and the lifter rod tends to bend or jam. The effective lateral stroke should reserve a safety margin of 0.3mm to 0.5mm beyond the undercut depth for full demolding. Engineers must check the maximum ejection limit of the injection machine and carry out interference check to avoid collision with ribs, pillars and inserts.

Structural design of lifter head

The lifter head forms the product surface directly. Transition lines on parting surfaces should be smooth. Draft angle of forming surfaces must match product drawings, and textured or polished surfaces require extra draft to prevent scratch marks. Round fillets are added at the joint of lifter head and rod to release stress and reduce fatigue fracture risk. When multiple lifters are arranged, all sealing surfaces should keep flush after mold closing to avoid mismatch and flash. Thin wall positions should avoid sharp thin steel structure to prevent short shot and deformation.

Guide and sliding fit design

The guide sleeve determines movement stability. The guide length should be more than twice the diameter of lifter rod, and single-side clearance is controlled between 0.01mm and 0.02mm. Excessive clearance causes offset and flash, while insufficient clearance leads to seizure after thermal expansion. Self-lubricating graphite bronze sleeves are recommended to cut maintenance work. Floating connectors are used to connect lifter rods to the ejector plate, which can absorb assembly and machining tolerance. Relief holes on ejector plates reserve enough lateral space for sliding movement.

Cooling and venting supporting design

Lifters are small moving inserts, and accumulated heat easily leads to sticking, residual stress and longer cycle time. Large lifters can be equipped with bubbler cooling channels. Tiny lifters with limited space adopt beryllium copper for better thermal conductivity. The forming zone of lifter heads is usually the melt convergence area, so vent slots must be set properly. Vent depth is adjusted according to plastic material, and vents cannot overlap sliding surfaces to stop plastic debris from entering gaps.

Wear resistance, limit and reset protection

Lifter rods can be nitrided or hard chrome plated to improve surface hardness for repeated friction. Stop pins on the ejector plate limit ejection travel and prevent lifters from slipping out of guide sleeves. Return springs or reset pins are used to make all lifters return synchronously. Lubrication grooves are reserved, and high-temperature grease should be applied regularly, while lubricant cannot contaminate molding sealing surfaces.

Layout and mass production adaption

For multiple undercuts on one part, lifters with unified angles are preferred to simplify adjustment. Different angles will cause asynchronous ejection and product twisting. Lifters should avoid collision with ejector pins, cooling channels and screws. For multi-cavity small molds, standardized lifter components are convenient for replacement and maintenance. Low-speed ejection test is required during mold trial to check scratch and whitening on undercut positions. Lifter structures only suit short-stroke internal undercuts. Deep undercut features should adopt side slide mechanisms instead. Extra elastic evaluation is required for soft TPU materials to prevent parts from locking on lifters.
