Maintenance Key Points of Hot Runner for Small Parts Plastic Molds
Small parts usually adopt multi-cavity molds with compact cavity layout, small nozzle spacing of hot runner and fine gate size. Under continuous mass production, faults such as material blockage, melt leakage and temperature control drift are more likely to occur. Standard daily maintenance can reduce downtime frequency and guarantee molding stability of small parts.
Insulation and Cooling Control During Shutdown
Rapid temperature reduction is not recommended for hot runner of multi-cavity small part molds. Set heat preservation temperature according to material characteristics during shutdown to prevent molten resin from cooling and solidifying rapidly inside runners. Discharge residual material inside runners before long-term shutdown to avoid carbon accumulation in narrow runner space. When replacing raw materials or pausing production, lower temperature in sections. Direct power-off and sudden cooling are forbidden. Stress generated by sudden cooling will damage heating coils and thermocouples. Adopt sectional heating when restarting heating, rise to set temperature slowly, check temperature stability of each measuring point, and confirm no abnormality before trial production.

Maintenance of Nozzle and Gate Area
The nozzle of hot runner for small parts is small with tiny gate aperture, which is easy to retain wire drawing and carbide. Disassemble and inspect nozzle head after each shutdown, clean carbon deposit and wire drawing residue at gate. Do not use hard metal tools to scrape nozzle end face to avoid scratch on sealing surface and melt leakage. Check fitting sealing surface between nozzle and cavity plate. Tiny indentation will cause melt leakage. Verify nozzle height to ensure flat fitting of nozzle end face. Thin plate of small part mold is prone to thermal deformation and nozzle offset after heating, leading to gate overflow or sealing failure. For valve pin hot runner, check smooth movement of valve pin, clean carbon deposit on valve pin surface, confirm synchronous opening and closing, and replace worn valve pin timely to prevent wire drawing and material shortage at gate of products.
Regular Inspection of Temperature Control Components
Each nozzle of multi-cavity small part hot runner is equipped with independent heating coil and thermocouple. Damage of components directly causes single cavity material shortage, color difference and burn mark. Inspect contact state of thermocouple during each mold maintenance, confirm probe is closely attached to heating area. Looseness leads to inaccurate temperature measurement. Detect resistance value of heating coil and compare with factory parameters. Replace components in advance if resistance is abnormal to prevent heating failure in production. Inspect wiring terminals. Wiring space of small part mold is narrow, mold opening and closing action easily pulls cables. Check whether outer skin is damaged and terminal is oxidized. Fix cables properly to avoid cable extrusion fracture.
Runner Plate Sealing and Melt Leakage Protection
Sealing gaskets of hot runner manifold bear continuous high temperature. Cavities of small part molds are densely arranged with compact runner layout. Once sealing parts age, leaked melt will spread rapidly and block surrounding cavities. Disassemble manifold during maintenance, check whether sealing ring is hardened and deformed, and replace sealing parts periodically. Clean carbide inside manifold runners. Dead corners of narrow runners are easy to accumulate carbon and affect melt flow balance. Tighten bolts evenly during manifold assembly, fasten diagonally step by step to prevent manifold warping caused by uneven stress and sealing failure. Check gap between manifold and mold plate after assembly and reserve reasonable thermal expansion allowance.

Cooling Matching Maintenance
The plate thickness of small part molds is limited. Cooling channels near hot runner are close. Blockage of water channels causes local temperature abnormality and accelerates aging of hot runner components. Flush cooling pipelines regularly to remove scale and impurities and guarantee smooth cooling water circulation. Inspect whether water pipe joints leak. Water leakage leads to sudden local temperature change of hot runner and damages heating components. Distinguish hot runner heat preservation area and mold cooling area, avoid cooling water directly impacting hot runner nozzle position. Temperature fluctuation will trigger unstable molding.
Disassembly, Assembly and Spare Parts Management
Hot runner parts for small parts are tiny. Valve pins, sealing rings, thermocouples and other accessories are precise. Classify and store parts during disassembly and assembly to prevent loss of tiny accessories. Use special soft-surface tools during disassembly and assembly to avoid bump scratch on sealing surface and nozzles. Establish spare parts list and stock vulnerable parts such as heating coils, thermocouples, sealing washers and valve pins to shorten waiting time of fault shutdown. Spare parts storage environment should be dry and dustproof to avoid rust of precise components.
Mold Trial Verification and Production Inspection
Carry out low-temperature heating test after maintenance and assembly, confirm uniform temperature of each temperature control channel without abnormality, then test on machine. Check molding status of gate of each cavity during mold trial, observe wire drawing, melt leakage and unbalanced filling. Monitor hot runner temperature curve regularly during mass production and pay attention to temperature control alarm records to capture early hidden dangers such as temperature drift. Clean residual material inside runners before mold storage, store in dry environment and implement rust protection to prevent rust of nozzles and valve pins.
