Key Indicators to Focus on When Selecting Hot Runner Systems for Injection Molds in China

2026-10-15 11:51:49 Injection Mold

Hot runner system directly affects part appearance, molding stability and mass production cost. Selection and procurement should not only depend on price. It needs to comprehensively evaluate various core indicators combined with plastic material, production cycle and mold structure to guarantee stable long-term manufacturing.

Gate structure and product matching indicators

The gate is the connection point between hot runner and cavity. Gate type must match appearance requirement and material property. Point gate leaves small vestige on visible parts. Valve gate can eliminate stringing and drooling, suitable for high-flow plastic and multi-cavity synchronous filling for threaded caps and sealing parts. Check gate diameter and sleeve wall thickness, evaluate gate residue and maximum injection pressure resistance. For glass-filled and high-viscosity materials, hardened gate nozzle is preferred to reduce wear from melt erosion. For multi-cavity molds, equal runner length for each gate is required to balance filling of every cavity.

Temperature control accuracy and heating component indicators

Stable temperature control is the core performance indicator of hot runner. The temperature controller usually requires control error within ±1℃. Large temperature fluctuation leads to material degradation, color difference and weld line defects. Built-in cartridge heaters are widely used. Check power distribution to ensure uniform temperature on manifold and nozzle without local overheating. Thermocouple type and installation position should be confirmed, and thermocouple must closely contact heating zone to avoid temperature measurement distortion. For heat-sensitive plastic, evaluate low-temperature holding capacity to prevent material degradation caused by long residence time. For engineering plastics, confirm maximum temperature resistance to satisfy molding requirements of PC, PPS and other high-temperature resins.

Manifold structure and pressure loss indicators

Inner runner of manifold needs smooth polishing and arc transition at corners to eliminate dead zones and avoid carbon accumulation. Calculate melt pressure loss inside runner. Excessive pressure loss increases injection machine load and causes short shot. Symmetrical runner layout is recommended for multi-cavity molds to synchronize melt arrival for all cavities. Manifold steel must have high temperature resistance and deformation resistance to prevent warping and material leakage under continuous high temperature. Check manifold sealing structure. The temperature grade of sealing rings should match molding temperature to stop melt leakage from assembly gaps.

Valve pin system performance indicators (valve gate hot runner)

For valve gate hot runner, focus on driving type. Hydraulic drive provides large force, while pneumatic drive features simple maintenance and no oil contamination. Valve pin is made of wear-resistant steel with surface hardening treatment to resist erosion from glass-filled plastic. Synchronization of valve pin opening & closing and repeated positioning accuracy are critical. Valve pins of multi-cavity mold should act synchronously to prevent asynchronous feeding of individual cavities. Verify valve pin stroke and sealing performance. The gate can be reliably shut off to stop drooling when machine stops. Evaluate the difficulty of valve pin replacement to shorten mold downtime for maintenance.

Material compatibility and wear resistance indicators

Select hot runner components according to molding plastic. Standard components work for unfilled PP and PE. For plastic filled with glass fiber or mineral, nozzle, runner inner wall and valve pin must adopt high wear-resistant alloy. For corrosive resin such as PVC and POM, confirm chemical compatibility between hot runner steel and material to avoid corrosion and precipitation. Check material grade and surface treatment of all melt-contacting components, assess wear and corrosion life in mass production, and calculate spare part cost.

Assembly dimension and mold space matching indicators

Before procurement, verify overall size, height and mounting hole position of hot runner system. Ensure it fits inside mold without interfering with ejection, slide and lifter mechanisms. Check nozzle extension length matching cavity plate thickness. Arrange wire terminals properly to avoid wire pulling and squeezing during mold opening and closing. Reserve enough disassembly space so that nozzle, thermocouple and heater can be replaced without full mold disassembly for convenient maintenance.

Spare parts supply and long-term maintenance indicators

Spare part delivery cycle cannot be ignored. Confirm stock and lead time of consumables such as heater, thermocouple, sealing ring and valve pin. Long delivery cycle will cause mold shutdown waiting for spare parts. Learn technical support capability of supplier, whether on-site commissioning service is available. Refer to practical service life cases under similar working conditions, estimate replacement cycle of wearing parts and calculate long-term maintenance cost. Clarify warranty scope and distinguish warranty period of heater, manifold and valve pin separately.

Mold trial verification and production process window

After hot runner selection, verify actual performance in mold trial. Test cavity filling balance and temperature stability, observe stringing, carbon accumulation and flash at gate. Record adjustable process range to ensure wide enough process window to stabilize production under raw material batch fluctuation and ambient temperature change. Take mold trial data as acceptance criteria. Require supplier to rectify non-conformity before mass production launch.
