How to Prevent Lifter Sticking of Injection Molds Through Routine Maintenance in China

Lifter mechanism is widely used in injection molds to form undercut features on the inner side of plastic products. Lifter sticking is one of the common mold faults during continuous mass production, which may lead to product surface scratching, lifter fracture and unexpected production shutdown. Standardized daily maintenance can effectively eliminate hidden risks and ensure stable molding.

Key Inspection Items for Daily Check

Visual inspection and manual operation check of lifter mechanism shall be carried out before startup and during shift handover. Check the surface of lifter body, lifter base and sliding guide groove for plastic precipitates, carbon deposits and residual tiny flash. Confirm the movement stroke of the lifter moves smoothly without jamming, and check whether foreign objects enter the matching gap between lifter and mold insert. Verify the matching clearance of the lifter, especially the root part and sliding surface, and pay attention to clearance change caused by local wear. Meanwhile, inspect the reset spring and limit structure of the lifter to ensure no fatigue deformation or breakage, and the position of limit block does not deviate, preventing over-travel movement and mechanical interference.

Lubrication Specification for Sliding Surfaces

Lubrication on sliding surfaces is the core measure to avoid sticking. High-temperature mold grease specially for molds should be selected instead of ordinary lubricants, to prevent carbon accumulation under high molding temperature. Lubrication shall be supplemented at fixed shot counts during mass production. During shutdown maintenance, old grease residue should be fully cleaned before re-applying lubricant. Apply grease on guide grooves and contact sliding surfaces of lifter base, and control the dosage properly. Excessive grease will be carbonized by high melt and accumulate inside clearance to increase movement resistance, while insufficient grease causes dry metal friction and scratches on sliding surfaces rapidly.

Control Points of Cleaning Maintenance

Plastic precipitates and decomposed gas byproducts will deposit gradually inside lifter gaps during production, occupying matching clearance and triggering sticking. Dismantle the lifter base regularly to clean dirt and tiny flash in guide grooves, side surfaces and root gaps. Soft tools are required in cleaning, and hard files or grinding wheels cannot be used to polish precision matching surfaces directly to avoid scratches. For molds processing glass-filled materials, the precipitation and wear rate are higher, so the cleaning cycle needs to be shortened. After cleaning, check fine scratches on matching surfaces, and conduct polishing repair if necessary.

Periodic Monitoring of Thermal Matching Clearance

The thermal expansion of mold steel will change the fitting clearance between cold assembly status and high-temperature production state, which is a frequent inducement of sudden lifter sticking during mass production. Daily maintenance cannot only inspect molds under cold conditions. After the mold is heated to production temperature and reaches thermal balance, recheck the sliding clearance of lifter. If the clearance is too small under hot state, the lifter will lock up after thermal expansion. Excessive clearance leads to flash, and flash trapped inside gaps further causes sticking. For long-running molds, record the lifter dimension loss during overhaul, and evaluate whether clearance grinding adjustment is required.

Supporting Maintenance of Cooling and Venting System

Local heat accumulation around lifter increases steel thermal expansion and changes fitting clearance. Meanwhile, burnt gas generates carbon deposit and induces sticking. Check cooling channels near lifter regularly to ensure smooth flow without scale or sludge blockage which creates hot spots. Clean residue accumulated in vent grooves beside lifter to ensure smooth gas discharge from cavity and reduce material decomposition attached on sliding surfaces. If the lifter is equipped with built-in cooling structure, test pipeline connectivity separately during each maintenance and check leakage.

Protection Measures During Production Shutdown

Before mold storage after production, complete full cleaning of lifter mechanism, remove impurities inside gaps and apply anti-rust grease. Reset the lifter to closed position, avoiding long-time extended status which causes continuous spring fatigue and tiny deformation of lifter. Control temperature and humidity of mold storage environment to prevent rust on sliding surfaces. Rust debris will scratch matching surfaces and easily trigger sticking in the next startup. For long-term stored molds, open the mold for regular re-inspection.

Fault Recording and Preventive Mold Repair

Record lifter wear, sticking precursors and clearance variation during every maintenance, and build mold maintenance files. If continuous scratches or steadily enlarged clearance are found on sliding surfaces, arrange grinding, polishing or lifter replacement in advance instead of waiting for complete sticking shutdown. Avoid applying excessive ejection force forcibly during trial molding or production adjustment, which deforms lifter base and guide grooves and reduces sticking risk in subsequent routine operation.
