Conventional Tolerance Range Achievable for Precision Plastic Molds

2026-10-13 11:50:45 Plastic Molds

Tolerance capacity of precision plastic molds cannot be generalized. Mold part machining tolerance and final molded plastic part tolerance belong to two different indicators. Material characteristics, product size and mold machining grade bring obvious impacts on final precision. Reasonable shrinkage compensation should be reserved at early mold design stage to prevent out-of-tolerance product dimensions.

Machining Tolerance of Mold Components

Conventional precision plastic molds are processed by wire EDM and grinding. Cavity and insert molding dimensions can normally reach ±0.003mm ~ ±0.005mm. Guide pin, guide bushing and positioning pin can be controlled within ±0.002mm. Ultra-precision molds are used for optical parts and precision gears with optical grinding process. Molding part tolerance can achieve ±0.001mm ~ ±0.002mm. Mold machining precision is only the foundation. Assembly gaps and splicing errors of inserts will accumulate and indirectly affect final plastic part dimensions.

Stable Tolerance Range of Molded Plastic Parts

For small precision parts under 10mm, widely used in precision connectors, inductor coils and micro gears, stable finished tolerance is generally ±0.01mm ~ ±0.03mm. Precision parts ranging 10~50mm, applied in precision plastic housings, can be stably controlled within ±0.03mm ~ ±0.05mm. For plastic parts of 50~100mm, shrinkage fluctuation increases, and tolerance range is usually ±0.05mm ~ ±0.08mm. Parts over 100mm are prone to deformation from uneven cooling. Finished tolerance mostly can only reach ±0.08mm ~ ±0.12mm. Further precision improvement is difficult.

Key Factors Affecting Upper Tolerance Limit

Plastic raw material shrinkage characteristic is the primary limiting factor. Glass fiber reinforced plastics have smaller shrinkage fluctuation and can maintain high dimensional accuracy for long-term production. Ordinary amorphous materials have large shrinkage variation. Under the same mold condition, finished product tolerance range will be widened significantly. Uneven product wall thickness leads to different cooling speed and warpage deformation, lowering dimensional stability. In mold structure, slides, lifters and multi-insert assembly accumulate gaps, so finished tolerance needs to be enlarged properly. During molding, mold temperature fluctuation, injection pressure change and raw material batch difference cause dimension shift. Continuous monitoring is required in mass production.

Industry Reference Tolerance Standard

Domestic plastic part tolerance follows GB/T 14486 standard for plastic molded part dimension tolerance. MT2 is high precision grade, MT3 is conventional precision grade. Precision injection products generally adopt these two grades. Ordinary appearance parts and non-assembly products mostly use MT5~MT7 with lower precision requirement. During mold quotation and drawing review, select corresponding tolerance grade combined with product size and material. Reserve mold modification allowance during mold processing for fine adjustment and compensation after trial molding.

Supporting Control Measures for Mass Production

High-precision molds alone cannot guarantee stable tolerance. Corresponding control schemes should be matched in production stage. Raw material drying, constant temperature control via mold temperature machine and stable injection parameters can reduce shrinkage fluctuation. Sample measurement in multiple batches during trial molding is needed to count dimension fluctuation data and revise mold shrinkage compensation value. Regular inspection on cavity and guide component wear is implemented. Once wear occurs, maintenance and repair should be carried out timely to prevent continuous tolerance drift during long mass production. For products with strict requirements, first article inspection and periodic sampling inspection are required, and dimension test records should be retained to realize quality traceability.
