Technical Data Required Before Formal Mold Opening for Chinese Plastic Parts

2026-09-20 11:23:22 Chinese Plastic Mold

2D engineering drawings serve as the fundamental technical basis for mold development of Chinese plastic parts. Complete dimension markings, tolerance specifications and surface quality standards should be included. Draft directions, fillets, wall thickness, undercut positions, thread specifications and assembly mating dimensions must be clearly marked on drawings. Material grades, color codes and surface zone classification shall be defined. Distinction should be made between A-surface, B-surface and non-cosmetic areas, with acceptance criteria for roughness, scratches and sink marks specified. All dimensions require datum marks to avoid disputes during measurement and inspection. The 3D model shall maintain version consistency with 2D drawings, preferably provided in STEP or IGS format. The model must be free of broken surfaces, overlapping faces and surface errors, with intact features including undercuts, holes, ribs and boss columns. The model version shall be locked. No arbitrary modification is allowed once mold machining starts without review and approval.

Product Design Review Report

The product design review report records results of structural feasibility analysis for Chinese plastic parts. It covers wall thickness uniformity check, draft angle verification and undercut core pulling evaluation. Potential molding defects caused by sharp corners, thick sections and thin ribs are analyzed. Assembly clearance and tolerance matching are assessed to verify compliance with application requirements. Modification suggestions, corresponding solutions and signed confirmations are documented in the report. For unavoidable structural risks, potential defects in mass production shall be notified to customers in advance and risk memos formed. This prevents massive mold rework after mold fabrication.

Material Specification Documents

Material specification documents detail raw material information including resin grade, original material certificate and modification ratios such as glass fiber reinforcement, flame retardancy and UV resistance. Drying parameters, molding temperature range and shrinkage rate are stated. Anisotropic shrinkage values in different directions are critical for cavity dimension calculation. If Chinese plastic parts demand special performance such as chemical resistance, thermal shock resistance, food contact or flame rating, relevant testing standards and acceptance indicators shall be attached. Material data sheets from raw material suppliers are filed as attachments for mold design and trial molding.

Mold Design Input Documents

Mold design input documents define overall mold requirements for manufacturing Chinese plastic parts. They specify cavity quantity, gate type and location, ejection scheme and core pulling mechanism, as well as hot runner or cold runner selection. Mold steel grade, insert hardness and surface treatment such as polishing, nitriding or PVD coating are confirmed. Target mold lifespan is defined to differentiate prototyping molds and mass-production molds. Requirements for vent slots, cooling channel layout, standard part brands, mold base standards, mold marking and lifting structures are included. All contents need mutual confirmation as rigid guidelines for mold designers.

DFM Design for Manufacturability Report

The DFM report conducts injection molding simulation for Chinese plastic parts to predict melt flow, weld line positions, air traps, unbalanced cooling and shrinkage warpage. It identifies whether weld lines fall in stress-bearing zones and evaluates risks of burning and voids caused by trapped air. Cycle time and deformation trend are assessed. Recommendations for product revision or mold optimization are put forward to avoid mass production troubles from improper gate design, insufficient venting and uneven cooling. The DFM report must be approved by customers and mold teams as precondition for mold design.

Inspection and Acceptance Standard Documents

Inspection and acceptance standards for Chinese plastic parts cover dimensional specifications, cosmetic criteria and functional testing requirements. Dimensional standards define measurement datums, sampling plans and measuring tools, classifying critical, major and minor dimensions with clear acceptance limits. Cosmetic standards use written rules or limit samples to define allowable sink marks, bubbles, scratches, flash and color difference. Functional test documents specify assembly test, strength test and aging test items, conditions and pass criteria. Rules for managing limit samples and defect samples are established for trial and mass production judgment.

Product Change Control Documents

Product change control manages revision of drawings and 3D models for Chinese plastic parts. Drawings shall be version-locked before mold opening. Any revision must go through formal change application. Impacts on mold structure, machining cost and lead time are evaluated. After mutual confirmation, drawings, 3D models and DFM reports are updated with new version numbers. Obsolete documents are marked invalid to prevent misuse. Unconfirmed temporary changes are eliminated before mold release to reduce mold rework risks.

Special Process and Packaging Technical Requirements

If secondary processes including ultrasonic welding, bonding, painting, plating, printing or insert embedding are needed for Chinese plastic parts, corresponding technical documents shall be prepared. Positioning structure, tolerances and constraints for post-processing are specified. Packaging standards define bagging methods, stacking limits and surface protection to prevent cosmetic scratches. For high-end automotive, electronic or medical Chinese plastic parts, industry compliance standards and certification requirements are attached. Mold design shall consider clean production and deburring needs. Complete technical document closure is essential for smooth mold fabrication and less rework of Chinese plastic parts. All documents need review, signature and filing by both parties, serving as valid basis for mold machining, trial molding and acceptance. Missing or inconsistent documents easily lead to misunderstanding, wrong cavity dimensions, demolding failure and non-conforming products, resulting in schedule delay and extra cost.
