Factors Affecting Plastic Mold Design Fees

Plastic mold design is the core link in the early stage of mold development. The rationality of the design scheme directly determines the later processing difficulty, molding stability and mold modification risk of the mold. There is no fixed standard for mold design fees in the industry, and the quotation will fluctuate greatly according to product structure, mold configuration, process requirements and project constraints. Fully understanding the influencing factors of design fees can help enterprises accurately budget in the early stage of the project, avoid blind cost investment, and realize reasonable cost control.

1. Product structural complexity

Product structure is the primary factor affecting mold design costs. Simple flat plastic parts without undercuts, deep cavities and special curved surfaces only adopt basic two-plate mold structure, with low design difficulty and small workload, so the design cost is low. For products with internal and external undercuts, deep cavity thin walls, dense reinforcing ribs and special hollow structures, it is necessary to design multiple slides, lifters and core pulling mechanisms.

The more complex the product structure, the more the mold matching mechanisms, and the designers need to carry out a large number of interference checks, flow path optimization and demolding structure design. Shell products with snaps, screw columns and precise assembly positions also need tolerance calibration and structural optimization, which greatly increases the design cycle and correspondingly improves the design cost.

2. Mold cavity quantity and layout scheme

Single-cavity molds have simple layout, fewer flow channels and cooling circuits, low design difficulty and low charging standard. With the increase of cavity number of multi-cavity molds, the design difficulty increases exponentially. Designers need to balance the glue feeding speed, cooling efficiency and exhaust effect of each cavity to ensure consistent quality of all products.

For mixed-cavity molds with different products in one mold, due to the different shrinkage rate and structural size of different parts, the flow channel layout and cooling system cannot be unified, requiring targeted independent design, and the design cost is much higher than that of conventional single-product multi-cavity molds.

3. Gating system type

Conventional cold runner molds have mature and simple gating structure, stable design process and low labor cost. If hot runner system is adopted, the design difficulty will be greatly increased. Designers need to match hot nozzle models, arrange manifold positions, and avoid interference with cooling water channels and ejection mechanisms.

Special gate structures such as submarine gates, needle point gates and horn gates need to be designed according to product appearance requirements, and automatic material breaking structures need to be reserved, which increases a lot of detailed design work. Valve-type hot runner molds also need to design stroke avoidance and action coordination, further improving design difficulty and cost.

4. Special mold process and performance requirements

Ordinary civil molds only need to meet basic injection molding conditions with low design difficulty. If the product has high-gloss mirror surface, transparent and flawless, food-grade, medical-grade and flame-retardant special requirements, the mold needs targeted optimized design.

High-gloss molds need uniform rapid cooling waterway layout, transparent parts need optimized exhaust and weld line avoidance design, and insert injection molds need to design precise positioning and anti-deviation structures. High-life molds also need split design of vulnerable parts for later maintenance, all of which will increase design workload and quotation.

5. Completeness of delivery documents

If only simple 3D mold models and 2D assembly drawings are delivered, the design content is single and the cost is low. If customers require complete technical documents including detailed processing drawings, tolerance marking, BOM list, electrode drawings, waterway drawings and DFM analysis reports, the design and sorting workload will increase significantly.

Foreign trade projects usually require standardized English drawings and complete inspection reports, which increases additional sorting work and further improves the overall design service cost.

6. Project additional constraints

Customer’s mold size constraints, injection machine parameters, mold opening stroke and other hard restrictions will limit the mold structure layout, increasing design difficulty. Frequent modification of product drawings in the design process will lead to repeated revision of mold schemes and generate additional working hours. In addition, urgent customized projects need priority design, resulting in emergency premium.

7. Summary

Plastic mold design fee is affected by multiple factors such as product structure complexity, cavity quantity, gating system, special process requirements and document delivery standards. The core reason for the difference in design quotation is the difference in design workload and technical difficulty. Enterprises should clarify product demands and mold functional requirements in the early stage of cooperation, so as to avoid subsequent design modification and cost increase, and realize transparent and reasonable mold design cost budget.
