Analysis of Injection Molding Difficulties for Household Appliance Plastic Housings

2026-08-27 11:21:28 Injection Molding

Plastic shells are essential structural and appearance components of household electrical appliances. They not only protect internal electronic structures but also determine product appearance quality and user experience. Household appliance plastic housings have strict requirements for surface smoothness, dimensional accuracy, impact resistance, aging resistance and overall consistency. Different from ordinary plastic parts, appliance shells are large in area, complex in structure and high in appearance standards, which brings many difficulties in injection molding mass production. Unreasonable molding parameters or improper mold design will easily cause defects such as shrinkage, warpage, flash and weld lines, seriously affecting product yield and assembly accuracy.

1. Raw Material Control and Adaptation Difficulties

Common materials for household appliance shells include ABS, PP, PC and various modified engineering plastics. Different materials have distinct fluidity, shrinkage and temperature resistance characteristics, which put forward high requirements for raw material management. Impurities, damp materials and excessive recycled materials will cause surface defects such as silver lines, black spots and bubbles during injection molding. Modified plastics added with flame retardants and tougheners have unstable melt fluidity. If drying temperature and drying time are not strictly controlled, residual moisture inside the material will vaporize at high temperature, resulting in poor surface quality and reduced structural strength. In addition, different batches of raw materials have slight differences in melt index, which easily causes inconsistent product size and appearance in continuous mass production.

2. Structural Characteristics and Molding Process Difficulties

Most household appliance plastic shells have large flat surfaces, uneven wall thickness, reinforcing ribs and mounting columns. The wall thickness difference leads to inconsistent cooling speed, resulting in internal stress concentration and local shrinkage depression. In the filling process of large‑area thin‑walled shells, the melt flow distance is long, and the pressure loss is large, which is easy to produce flow marks, insufficient filling and obvious weld lines. Weld lines on the appearance surface will directly reduce the appearance grade of electrical products. Injection pressure, injection speed, melt temperature and cooling time are mutually restricted. Excessively fast injection speed will cause flash and material burning, while excessively slow speed will cause poor filling. The process window of household appliance shell molding is narrow, and slight parameter deviation will lead to batch quality problems.

3. Mold Precision and Deformation Control Difficulties

Mold precision determines the final molding quality of plastic shells. The parting surface, cavity polishing and cooling system of large‑scale shell molds have high design and processing requirements. Uneven parting surface fit and residual sundries will produce flash defects. Unreasonable cooling water channel layout leads to inconsistent cooling speed of all parts of the product, resulting in warpage and torsion after molding, which affects assembly clearance consistency. After the product is demolded, there is still residual internal temperature, and secondary shrinkage and deformation will occur in the natural cooling stage. Large‑area plastic shells have poor self‑rigidity, and deformation correction is difficult in post‑processing, which greatly improves the difficulty of precision production.

In conclusion

The injection molding difficulties of household appliance plastic shells are mainly reflected in raw material stability, structural process adaptability and mold precision control. In actual production, standardized raw material pretreatment, optimized injection molding process parameters and high‑precision mold design are essential. Only by comprehensively controlling material performance, process parameters and mold structure can we effectively reduce various molding defects, improve product qualification rate and meet the high‑precision and high‑appearance requirements of household appliance plastic shell mass production.
