Analysis of ISO Qualification Standards in Injection Molding Industry

2026-07-02 09:31:25 Injection Molding

The injection molding industry is supported by a complete ISO international standard system, divided into four categories: general basic management systems, industry-specific quality systems, equipment & process technical specifications and extended auxiliary management systems. Different certifications match customer admission, on-site production control, export tendering and other demands. Manufacturers can select targeted accreditations according to their core products such as daily plastic parts, auto components and medical consumables. Combined with real workshop practice, this paper interprets core requirements, applicable scenarios and practical value of each standard.

1. General Three Basic Systems: Entry-level Qualifications for All Molding Factories

1.1 ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System

It is the most fundamental certification for every injection molding enterprise, covering full-process control from raw material storage, mold maintenance, injection forming, sampling inspection to finished goods delivery. It sticks to three core principles: customer orientation, whole-process control and continuous improvement. Mandatory industry clauses contain batch traceability records, mold maintenance ledgers, locked standardized injection parameters, first-piece / patrol / last-piece inspection rules, defective product isolation and closed-loop 8D correction mechanism. Small and medium factories can implement it easily.

This certification applies to daily necessities and home appliance plastic parts manufacturers, acting as the basic threshold of domestic bidding and overseas supplier audit. It cannot meet the access requirements of auto and medical high-end supply chains alone, but it can standardize mold change and machine debugging procedures, lower dimensional and appearance defects, and cut rework losses and customer complaints.

1.2 ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System

This standard focuses on environmental compliance of molding workshops, regulating waste gas, wastewater, plastic solid scraps, cooling water discharge and raw material volatile pollution. Key control rules include dust collection during granulation, activated carbon waste gas treatment, waste release agent recovery, classified plastic waste storage and standardized disposal of hazardous waste like waste hydraulic oil and cleaning solvent. It is a compulsory audit item for environmental assessment and large brand client factory inspections. All medium-large and export-oriented molding factories must hold this certificate, or they will be removed from supplier lists.

1.3 ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System

It controls five major risks in molding workshops: mechanical injury, high-temperature scald, noise pollution, chemical contact and electric shock. Required measures include interlock safety doors for injection machines, heat insulation for high-temperature barrels, complete MSDS files for chemicals, mandatory labor protection equipment wearing and regular safety drills. Mature mass-production factories will apply ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 together to form complete compliance credentials for audits and bidding.

2. Special ISO Systems: Access Thresholds for High-end Industry Supply Chains

2.1 IATF 16949:2016 Automotive Special Quality System

Based on ISO 9001, it is a mandatory certification for auto plastic component suppliers with stricter requirements. Factories must fully deploy five core quality tools: APQP, FMEA, MSA, SPC and PPAP. Mandatory rules cover 100% full-batch material traceability, strict mold modification control, locked injection parameters and fast closed-loop 8D customer complaint handling. It applies to auto interior parts, lamp housings and wiring connectors; manufacturers without this certificate cannot cooperate with mainstream vehicle brands.

2.2 ISO 13485:2016 Medical Device Quality System

For medical plastic parts like syringe shells and surgical accessories, it strengthens product safety, cleanroom grading and process verification rules. Specialized clauses include sterile raw material verification, equipment disinfection, full IQ/OQ/PQ validation and full life-cycle product traceability. It is a necessary certification for medical-grade PEEK and precision plastic molding factories.

3. Auxiliary ISO Standards and Certification Selection Suggestions

ISO technical specifications such as ISO 20457 (plastic part tolerance standard) and ISO 14644-1 (cleanroom grading standard) are execution guides rather than enterprise certificates. Extended systems including ISO 50001 energy management and ISO 27001 information security management serve medium-large factories for green factory evaluation and confidential drawing protection.

In terms of certification selection: small daily goods factories only need ISO 9001; electronic and home appliance factories need the three basic systems; auto parts factories add IATF 16949; medical molding factories match ISO 13485. All ISO certificates are valid for three years and require annual supervision audit to avoid invalidation due to unupdated workshop files.
