Replacement of Worn Guide Pillars for Injection Molds

2026-03-14 10:50:22 Injection Molds

Guide pillars are core guiding components of injection molds. Long-term operation will cause wear, strain or looseness, directly reducing mold clamping accuracy, causing product flashes and even damaging the cavity and core. Standard disassembly, inspection, assembly and debugging are crucial to restore mold precision and ensure stable production. This article specifies the complete replacement process in line with standard maintenance procedures, applicable as workshop technical documents.

1. Pre-maintenance Preparation and Safety Confirmation

Remove the mold from the injection machine safely and fix it firmly on a special maintenance platform, clean oil, iron chips and waste on the mold surface. Prepare new guide pillars and bushes of the same specification, hex wrenches, copper rods, dial indicators, oilstones and high-temperature grease. Confirm the mold is fully parted with no risk of spring ejection or slider movement; operators wear protective gloves for safe operation.

2. Disassembly of Worn Guide Pillars and Bushes

Check the fixing structure of the guide pillar, usually fixed by tail screws or flanges. Loosen the fixing screws with a hex wrench, then gently tap the non-working end with a copper rod to take out the guide pillar; do not use a hammer directly to avoid template hole deformation. Check the matching guide bush synchronously, replace it together if it is strained, loose or worn. Mark the old parts for model verification.

3. Template Mounting Hole Inspection and Repair

Wipe the mounting hole clean and check for deformation, strain or ovality. Use a dial indicator to test roundness and perpendicularity. Minor flaws can be polished with oilstone; serious deformation requires bushing or reboring before assembly, to ensure proper fit of new parts.

4. Assembly of New Guide Pillars and Bushes

Wipe new parts clean and verify the size. Put the guide pillar into the hole evenly, tap it in place with a copper rod to keep vertical, then tighten the fixing screws moderately. Install the guide bush in the same way. Test the sliding manually to ensure smooth movement without jamming or excessive clearance.

5. Mold Clamping Alignment and Precision Debugging

Close the mold manually and slowly, check the alignment of guide pillars and bushes, ensure no interference or abnormal noise. Check the parting surface fit and use a dial indicator to test perpendicularity. Apply high-temperature grease on the guide pillar surface after confirming smooth operation.

6. Test Molding and Acceptance

Install the mold on the injection machine for trial run, set low opening and closing speed, check for abnormal noise or overheating. Test produce products and check appearance, size and flashes. The replacement is qualified if products are qualified and mold runs smoothly. Record maintenance details for future traceability.
